Well, before you grab your favorite human shampoo, remember that your dog's needs are a little different from yours. Since dogs dont need to be washed every day, selecting a high quality shampoo is worthwhile. The primary issue is pH, which should be lower than your typical human shampoo, in order to qualify as the best dog shampoo.

Ingredients - It is always a good idea to read the ingredients list. The best dog shampoo should include natural ingredients. The best dog shampoo should not lather up like foam, instead it should lather lightly and rinse easily to leave your dog clean.

Scent - Be careful of heavy artificial scents as they may cause skin or respiratory irritation.

The main difference between your shampoo and the best dog shampoo will be the pH levels. A lower pH is more suited to dogs. Leaving a soapy residue can be irritating to your dog's skin, so the best dog shampoo will rinse thoroughly and completely without leaving a residue.

Grooming a dog - necessary and beneficial

Regular grooming is essential to your dog's health and well being as it will keep the coat clean and healthy. It will stimulate the blood supply to skin, and allow the natural oils to circulate to the coat. It will also help you to check for potentially serious problems i.e. hair loss, inflammations, unusual tenderness or lumps under the skin. Constant scratching in a particular area may also be an indication of a problem. Consult your veterinarian about any unusual problems found.

Combing
Comb should be done in the direction of hair growth, combing small sections at a time, until the coat is tangle free. If the coat has a particular knot or tangle, you may have to trim it off with scissors. A de-matting comb, slicker can be used to remove mats. When using a combination comb, begin with the widely spaced teeth, and follow with the finer teeth.

Brushing
Begin brushing at the head, working toward the tail and down the legs. Always brush in the direction of hair growth. A pin brush can be used to fluff the coat by brushing against the direction of hair growth. Regular brushing will help distribute the natural oils from the skin, producing a healthy, shiny coat.
Puppies
Like babies, puppies have short attention spans. Select a time when the puppy is less energetic. Begin with short grooming sessions, five minutes or so. Constantly talk to your puppy in a gentle and reassuring tone to make him feel comfortable. Be sure to check his ears, paws, teeth, and underside during the grooming procedure. This will make him accustomed to being handled and examined. Gradually, he will be quite comfortable being groomed, and will look forward to these sessions with you.

Frequency
A good time to do this is after the dog has been walked, while he is relieved and calm. Select a time when you will not be interrupted and have ample time to do a proper grooming.

Animal cruelty - types

Few months back i posted a true incidence with a female dog; how a poker was removed surgically from dog's uterus.
Even just a thought of that incidence make me restless, how a human can be co cruel to these innocent animals.
There can be different reasons why individuals abuse animals. Each type of abuse has displayed certain patterns of behavior that we can use to help understand more about why people commit the crimes we encounter today.
Animal cruelty is often divided into two main categories: active or comission and passive or omission.


Active Cruelty - where a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal, and is also referred to as NAI (Non-Accidental Injury). These acts are most disturbing and should be considered signs of serious psychological problems. Animal abuse in violent homes can take many forms and can occur for many reasons. Many times a person who is abusive may kill, or threaten to kill, the household pets to intimidate family members into sexual abuse, to remain silent about previous or current abuse.
Passive Cruelty - it is a case of neglect, where the crime is a lack of action rather than the action itself. Severe animal neglect can cause incredible pain and suffering to an animal.
Examples are starvation, dehydration, parasite infestations, inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and failure to seek veterinary care when an animal is sick.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi or "Vinayak Chaturthi" is one of the major traditional festivals celebrated by the Hindu community. Typically the day falls sometime between August 20 and September 15. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Ananta Chaturdashi, and is traditionally celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha is the son of Shiva or Shankar and Parvati. It is believed that Lord Ganesh was born on a fourth day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Magh. Thus the festival dedicated to the worship of Lord Ganesha day is named as Ganesh Chaturthi. He is worshipped during every festival and before people undertake a journey or embark upon a new venture. You will also see him carefully guarding entrances to temples and homes, peeping out of calendars and happily gracing marriages and other such occasions. As the idol is immersed amidst loud chants of "Ganesh Maharaj Ki Jai!", the festival comes to an end with pleas to the Lord to return the next year with chants of "Ganpati bappa morya, pudcha varshi laukar ya" (Hail Lord Ganesh, return again soon next year).

A case of rickets in 40 days old pup

his name is noddy. breeder sold him at the age

of 20 days. Initially he was fine but slowly he was not able to walk properly. He was sick and not eating his food properly. one of the vet diagnosed canine distemper. Owner was not convinced with his statement and brought the pup to my clinic. It was a clear case of rickets. Blood parameters were normal but walking was a problem. The pup is under treatment and is recovering very well. i will put his new photos after the treatment is over. till that we have to wait to see the progress.

pyometra surgery through right flank incision

This dog was having this disease for quite a long time. Usually i operate pyometra cases through mid-line incision/linea alba approach. Though it was an open pyometra case and the skin over belly was very pendulous and i felt that healing will be delayed due to veyr loose skin. I decided to operate her through right flank approach and i found that my decision was right. i did ovariohysterectomy and i was happy that incision was very small and will heal in just 3-5 days and even the dog had very-very quick recovery from anesthesia. Finally dog and owner are happy and i am happy too as dog is safe and will be healthy.

Kite - injured by the kite thread

The kite was injured by a kite thread. it was bleeding profusely and had a hair line fracture over bone. It was lying on the road and was rescued by two persons. They got it to my clinic for treatment. First aid was given and the bird was handed over to shelter staff for further care and recovery. Some times i am not able to understand why these innocent birds have to pay for our joy. but there are people to help these creatures. I am very thankful to God that He made me a Vet to help the suffering animals.

Rippet - malignant tumor

Rippet had this growth for a long time. She was operated for this and the sample was sent for histopathology. which turned out to be a malignant tumor. But fortunately she was fine after the surgery and recovered very well.

PUP CARE - FOOD

There are few things that compare to the sight of your puppy running to greet you, face alive with joy and excitement, tail wagging, bounding along on those little legs.
Growing pups need a good amount of calcium, protein and vitamins to meet their growth requirements. Failing to meet these requirements can result in stunted, unhealthy pups with soft, fragile bones. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people who think that milk is all their puppy needs. Obviously, this is just not true. There are different puppy foods available for different sized dogs - visit your vet to discuss the best diet for your pup. What else can you feed your puppy? I strongly advise feeding long bones 2-3 times each week. Not only are these entertaining for your pup, they also clean their teeth and massage their gums. Don’t feed the shaft of the so-called ‘marrow’ or ‘meat’ bones – this hard, dense bone can break teeth. Make sure you keep these frozen till ready to feed, as food poisoning can occur if poor hygiene is practised.
Don’t feed your puppy onions or large amounts of chocolate and salt as these are poisonous to dogs, or excessive amounts of fatty foods.

URETHRAL CALCULI, FOREIGN BODY IN INTESTINE - A DIFFICULT CASE IN A PUG

Nitro had multiple problems i.e. vomiting, anorexia, hematuria, urinary incontinence, lethargic and no activity at all. Blood and urine samples were sent for the analysis. Radiographs were done to find out the cause. Reports revealed presence of foreign body in the intestine and stones in urinary bladder and urethra. Enema was done and fluid therapy

and treatment was given to the dog to stabilise the condition. Dog passed stones with feces and slowly the bowls were cleared and the condition improved with time. But Urethral stones were creating the problem and finally cystotomy was done to solve the problem. Diet plan was given as per the stone analysis report.

Snoopy - Jaundice

Snoopy was brought to my clinic on Sunday evening. He was sick since last 25 days and was getting treatment for anorexia by other vets, but no results. When he came, he was showing all the symptoms of jaundice. Blood sample was collected and sent to the lab for test. The results were very much altered and the values were quite on higher side i.e. CBC, LFT, RFT were abnormally high. The dog was vomiting and was passing bloody stool and was not eating anything. Treatment is on, lets hope for the best.

Spinal fracture in a male daschund dog

This is a story about a male 9 years old daschund. all of a sudden one day he was sick. owners were unaware about accident with the dog. they were taking him to one vet to another for the treatment. One of the vet suggested for radiographs and fracture was diagnosed. owners approached me from the other state for the help and we had telephonic conversation about the treatment to be followed over there. first priority was to stabilise the condition before surgical intervention. The dog had internal injuries and was bleeding internally profusely. the treatment was going on and suddenly the dog developed bloat. His condition deteriorated and then decision was taken to ease his suffering. I am not able to understand why they were not getting proper care for their dog in that city. Every time its God who decide the destiny of everyone. God may give him peace in heaven.

WAYS TO GET RID FROM URINE SPOTS

Follow these steps to get rid of dog's urine spots -
I. Take towel, fold it in half, put it on the stain and step on it. Once the first old towel has soaked up as much as it can, grab the next one and repeat. Continue this with new towels until you no longer see any wetness on the towel after walking on it. If you plan to reuse your old towels, mix about a quarter cup of apple vinegar in with your regular detergent when doing the wash.
II. Soak the dog urine stain with a solution of plain white vinegar and warm water. Let it soak for about five minutes. Vinegar is a good ingredient for cleaning dog urine due to its properties as a solvent and for being antibacterial.
III. Blot up the vinegar and water using the same method found in step one. After that, pour baking soda over the entire stain. Baking soda is extremely absorbent and will help not only with dog urine stains but also with dog urine odor.
IV. It's important that you NEVER SOAK your carpet. Again, pour a little more warm water on the problem area. Now, gently rub the cleaner into the carpet and allow it to sit for a couple of minutes. Finally, extract all the liquid and cleaner from the carpet with the water.
When done correctly, the carpet should be "slightly damp" with no odor at all.

MINI IN HUGGIES DIAPER

Mini, three month old, female Lhasa apso was brought to the clinic with the history of vomiting, loose motion and fever. A local vet gave some treatment but she didn’t respond to it. Owners were very much concerned about her condition and contacted me at 1:30 A.M. and there worry was clear from their tone. I appreciate their concern as early morning they were at my clinic. I explained them about the condition and the treatment was given every day. Mini recovered gradually and is back to normal life. I enjoyed always seeing her in huggies diaper. Who says the diapers are made only for humans? Even the animals also have right to use them. I am happy that Mini is playful and eating very well now. Another important thing; I appreciate Divya, Atul, Kumar and of course Preeti also, for their patience and concern. It’s hard to find such good owners in today’s time. I must thanks to you people to look after her so well, like your own child.

6 REASONS FOR HAIR LOSS IN DOGS

Dog hair is important because it protects the dog from extreme temperature, abrasions and physical damage. Hair loss from seasonal shedding is normal. Other causes of hair loss may require veterinarian diagnosis and treatment.
1. Allergies
Allergic reactions are a major cause of patchy hair loss. The dog may be allergic to airborne pollen, food ingredients or environmental exposure to allergens. Licking of paws, or small bumps over the body are typical symptoms of allergy. Once the irritant is identified, the dog exposure can often be restricted.
2. Folliculitis
Damage to hair follicles causes hair loss. Allergies, hormonal problems or bacterial infections cause belly hair loss, scaling or skin lesions. Usually antibiotics are prescribed to treat the infection.
3. Endocrine Problems
Endocrine glands control normal function and development. The glands produce hormones critical to dog health. Some endocrine diseases and problems cause serious hair loss. Examples are hypothyroidism and Cushing's disease.
4.Parasites
Sarcoptic mange is caused by mites.Many parasites such as fleas, ticks, mites and lice cause hair loss. Inflammation from the parasites causes infections and bald patches. Mange is an example of hair-loss disease transmitted by parasites.
5. Ringworm
Ringworm causes hair loss, skin scales and crusty sores. The hair loss is usually in a ring pattern and may itch. Various types of fungus cause ringworm, and it is usually spread by contact with an infected animal or items such as bedding or grooming gear shared with an infected animal.
6. Stress
When a dog has stress in its life such as illness, surgery or loss of an owner, the dog may blow its coat. Instead of normal shedding, the dog loses big clumps of hair. Handfuls may come out at a touch or in the dog bedding.

REASONS TO SPAY A FEMALE DOG

Why Female Dogs Should Be Spayed
1. Mammary Cancer
A female dog spayed before her first heat will have about zero chance of developing mammary cancer. After the first heat, this incidence climbs to 7% and after the second heat the risk is 25%. It is easy to see that an early spay can completely prevent what is frequently a very difficult and potentially fatal form of cancer.
Spaying removes both the uterine horns and both ovaries and is crucial in the prevention as well as the treatment of mammary cancer.

2. Simple Convenience
The female dog comes into heat every 6 months or so. There is a bloody vaginal discharge and attraction of local male dogs. Often there is an offensive odor. All of this disappears with spaying.
3. Pyometra
Pyometra is the life-threatening infection of the uterus, which generally occurs in middle-aged to older female dogs in the six weeks following heat. The uterus with pyometra swells and is filled with pus, bacteria, dying tissue, and toxins. Without treatment, the pet is expected to die. Despite her serious medical state, she must be spayed quickly if her life is to be saved.
This is an extremely common disease of older unspayed female dogs. Pyometra is not something that might happen; consider that it probably will happen. If you still decide against spaying, be very familiar with the signs of pyometra.

THREE COMMON SKIN PROBLEMS IN DOGS

Types of dog skin problems
1. Allergic dog skin problems are more common than any other type of skin problem. There are various reasons your dog might have an allergic skin reaction. The reaction is usually caused by food, a tick bite, or inhaled vapors. Once the dog has the reaction to the allergen, they will start to scratch, bite, or even lick the affected area. If you notice your dog excessively itching or scratching an area on their skin and there is not sign of infection or an open wound, this might be an allergic reaction. Take your dog to the veterinarian for the check up.
2. Bacterial dog skin problems usually appear after an open wound. The bacteria will infect the area around the wound because of its warm and moist bacteria nurturing environment. The bacteria will grow until the entire area around the wound is infected with pus, which causes considerable pain to your dog. In many cases, the dog will like the area to keep it clean and use its own saliva to help heal the wound.
3. Fungal dog skin problems - it is caused by a fungus and can even be transmitted to humans. The most common fungal dog skin problems are ringworm. If your dog develops ringworm, a reddish raised ring will be visible on the skin where the worm is located. If your dog develops fungal dog skin problems you should immediately take them to the vet for treatment.

Hot Spot in dogs

Acute moist dermatitis or hot spots are red, moist and painful sores that occur due to intense scratching and biting at the skin. Dogs will start scratching because of fleas or allergies and open the skin for bacterial growth and a hot spot develops. These hot spots can become very large and grow quickly.
Commonly affected breeds are Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, and Saint Bernard.
Symptoms - The spots are red, hot, moist, and painful. The dog will bite and itch at a spot until they inflict this trauma. Hair loss will start to occur over the area, that is when many owners first see the sore.
Treatment of hot spot -
The hair around the sore needs to be clipped so that air and medication can reach the wound. The clipped area should include the wound itself as well as the edges of the lesion. If the wound is large and the dog seems to be in pain, sedation may need to be used.
The wound should be cleansed and rinsed thoroughly with water.
The original problem needs to be treated. Antibiotics are sometimes needed to help speed healing.
The dog needs to stop itching the spot, this may mean using an Elizabethan collar.
Treatment can be done at home but these spots are very painful and dogs can bite their owners if in pain.
