NAIL FUNGUS PROBLEM IN YOUR DOG

FUNGAL INFECTION - One cause of nail fungus is a specific type of fungi called dermatophytes. Another cause of nail fungus are yeast, which is also a common fungi.
Dermatophytes and yeasts cause nail fungus by eating away at keratin, the main protein that makes up our fingernails, toenails, hair, and skin. The nails try to produce keratin at a faster rate, causing it to thicken and eventually detach from the nail bed. Other effects will include nail discoloration, inflammation of the skin around the infected nails, pain, and a foul odor.
These effects are certainly not pleasant. Your dog will have difficulty in walking and playing. This condition is not easy to cure and should not be ignored as later on there can be major problems.

vitamin C - Guinea pig diet

Why vitamin c is important - Vitamin c is especially important in a guinea pigs diet. Unlike many animals, guinea pigs can't produce their own vitamin c. A deficiency of vitamin c, could lead to scurvy and also loss of resistance to other diseases. Although good quality pellets contain vitamin c, its not an adequate amount for a guinea pig, their diet needs to be supplemented with vitamin c vegetables. They can be halved into 25 mg daily. Don't dissolve it into their drinking water, but add it to a little water, using a 1-ml syringe to administer the vitamin c.

YOUR PUP'S FIRST BATH

Puppies generally do not need to get bathed until they are three months old since they get their vaccinations during these first three months of their lives and during this time their bodies are more sensitive to catch a cold. It's always best to take all the necessary precautions. When your puppy finally takes his first bath, make sure to find a nice warm spot to it in and use the appropriate dog shampoo. Puppies and dogs don't need to get bathed very often in order to stay clean. The most important requirement for their cleanliness is to get groomed and brushed everyday. If the dog or puppy gets mud on his coat, you can clean it off by using a towel with soap and warm water.
If the puppy is very young, you can bathe him in the kitchen sink.Place a clean wet wash cloth on the bottom of the sink so the pup won't slip.Buy a dog shampoo from a Pet store.Human shampoo is not good for bathing puppies or dogs because the pH of dog skin is different from the human pH.

guinea pig - bathing

Bathing
Most guinea pigs do not like the water. Guinea pigs should not be bathed unless they absolutely need it – for medical reasons, such as fleas, or if they happen to get extremely dirty, mud or sewage.
As an alternative to a bath, consider some of the following options:
Powder baths – apply the powder to the fur and brush out with a stiff brush
clean dirty bottoms with hydrogen peroxide – gently rub to remove feces and urine stains
clean fur with a washcloth and warm soapy water

PARVO SYMPTOMS IN PUP

common symptoms

1. Diarrhoea - The first and most distinctive symptom of parvo is diarrhoea which is bloody watery waste and with a very foul odor. While diarrhea is a symptom of many other diseases, it is better to be sure.

2. Dehydration - If your pet has diarrhea, dehydration will follow. If your dog sends out waste more than it takes in fluids, the effects of dehydration can be lethal.
3. Lethargy - Dogs that don’t like to run, exercise, and play around the house are probably sick. You can save your dog’s life if you act fast on any visible symptoms.
4. Vomiting - This symptom, when combined with the other symptoms, can be caused by parvo.
5. Loss of appetite  - A dogs that is not feeling well won’t want to touch its food. When your dog has skipped a meal or two, it’s time for you to be concerned.
6. Bloody discharges - This is the worst symptom to see in your pet, because the disease has taken over most of your dog’s body. At this point, dog parvo may be on its crucial stage and if your dog is three months or younger, it may not make it through this disease.
7. High fever - Bloody discharges and high fever usually go together. These two symptoms indicate that your dog is suffering from a severe infection.
If you see any one of these  parvo symptoms in your pet, take it to the veterinarian for further diagnosis and immediate attention.

PARVO VIRAL FACTS

A lot of pet owners think that parvo is such a very rare disease. Actually, it isn’t that rare. All dogs are prone to this disease, especially if they are exposed to the risk factors. If you have a dog, it isn’t enough to be informed about the disease. You also have to send your dog to the vet for the necessary vaccines.
A dog protected from parvo doesn’t necessarily mean that it is totally free from the virus itself. The dog can still be a carrier of the disease, without anyone else knowing about it. The most common way to transmit dog parvo is through sniffing, licking, or getting in contact with the feces of a dog that may have it.
When it comes to the dog parvo disease, prevention is always better than a cure. Dog parvo is a condition that can end your dog’s life. It is the dreaded disease that any breeder or pet owner doesn’t want their pets to suffer from. Dog parvo is much more easily prevented than treated. This is because the moment your pet acquires the disease, the chances are high that it may not survive.
Dog parvo is the most lethal to smaller and younger dogs. Even worse is the fact that these dogs are not qualified for immunization, and the antibodies found in their mother’s milk are not sufficient enough to ward off this infectious virus. As such, younger dogs affected by this disease could die within days from the time that their symptoms show.
so, dont wait for the things to happen. Take your pup to Vet and get all the information about vaccines and get your dog vaccinated annually to keep it protected.

TURTLE CARE

A balanced diet is very important for good health. A wide variety of foods should be fed. Fish are all suitable. Whole fish are better than gutted fish and can be fed chopped or whole. Most suppliers of feeder fish minimize their feeding to insure good water quality in overcrowded setups. Ideally, fish should be well fed prior to being fed to turtles. Freezing for more than 3 days may eliminate transfer of parasites. Goldfish can be frozen in water in ice cube trays to reduce freezer burn. Individual ice cubes containing a dozen or so goldfish can be thawed as needed. Wild caught sticklebacks and mosquito fish should not be fed because they are natural vectors for several serious parasites. Avoid large quantities of oil laden species such as mackerel, and to a lesser extent smelt and goldfish. If fed in moderation as part of a balanced diet, frozen fish should not cause any problems. Fish should not make up the majority of aquatic turtles' diets.

TIPS TO CARE YOUR DOG IN WINTERS

Winter pet care:

* Brush your dog regularly. The air in most houses becomes dry during the colder months, which depletes moisture from dog skin and fur. Brushing will improve skin, coat and blood circulation.

* A thick-coated dog typically needs grooming in cold weather. The fur can get wet and matted, making it an irritant. Clean fur lofts and holds air, thus helping the animal stay warm.

* Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter. Leave the coat longer for more warmth. When you bathe your dog, completely dry him before taking him out for a walk.

* Use omega fatty acid supplements during the winter, ideally starting several weeks before cold weather sets in, to help skin and coat.

* If your dog engages in a lot of outdoor activities, increase his food supply to help keep his coat thick and healthy.

GUINEA PIG - PREGNANCY AND CARE

The gestation period for Guinea Pigs is 66 to 70 days. The greater the number of babies the mother is carrying, the shorter the pregnancy. Most pregnancy are non problematic. Guinea Pigs are more prone to heat related death in the latter stages of pregnancy.
No changes are visible in appearance or behavior during the first four weeks. The last two to three weeks, the mother to be will become quite "plump." This is expected as the babies will comprise more than half of her body weight. You can see the movement of and feel the babies during the last two weeks. It has also been observed that fiber may contribute to preventing hair thinning, a common occurrence in late pregnancy, so the hay becomes very important. In addition, she will need double vitamin C to prevent toxemia.
The size of the litter can vary from 1 to about 6. The best size you could hope for is about 3 medium sized babies. If the litter is very small - say 1 or 2 babies they will probably be very large and the mother could have problems giving birth to them.

FEVER VS HYPERTHERMIA IN DOGS

A fever is defined as abnormally high body temperature. It is believed that fever is a method of fighting infection. The body resets the temperature control area of the brain to increase the body temperature – probably in response to invasion of foreign matter such as bacteria or viruses. Since many invaders do not thrive in hot environments, by increasing the temperature of the body, these invaders can be destroyed.

This is different from hyperthermia, which is an increase in body temperature due to external influences such as hot weather, inability to pant or sweat. The brain does not intend for the body temperature to increase.

Fever is usually differentiated from hyperthermia based on the animal's recent environment, for example if he was in a hot car or just went for a long jog in 100 degree heat, as well as the animal's response to the increased temperature.
